Flight Over the Himalayas
Board your morning flight over the Himalayas — one of the most spectacular air routes on Earth, with views of the Karakoram and Zanskar ranges. Arrive in Leh at 3,500 metres. The rest of the day is devoted to gentle acclimatisation — a leisurely lunch at your hotel, a short walk through the old town's quiet lanes, and an early evening to let your body adjust to the altitude. Resist the urge to explore. Tomorrow, Ladakh reveals itself.
Palace, Stupa & Monastery
Begin with a visit to Leh Palace, the nine-storey former residence of the Ladakhi royal family, built in the 17th century and offering sweeping views across the Indus Valley. Continue to Shanti Stupa for sunset — the white dome glowing against a darkening sky as prayer flags snap in the mountain wind. In the afternoon, walk through Leh's old town to meet a family of copper artisans who have preserved their craft for generations, shaping vessels and ornaments using techniques unchanged since the Silk Route era.
Over Khardung La
Today you cross Khardung La — at 5,359 metres, one of the highest motorable passes on Earth. The ascent is thrilling: switchbacks through snow and scree, prayer flags whipping at the summit, and a silence so vast it feels sacred. Descend into the Nubra Valley, a hidden oasis of apricot orchards, sand dunes, and double-humped Bactrian camels — the last descendants of Silk Route caravans. Take a camel trek across the dunes at Hunder as the late afternoon light turns the sand to gold. Check in to your luxury camp as stars begin to appear in a sky untouched by light pollution.
Diskit & Sumur
Rise early for a visit to Diskit Monastery, perched on a hilltop above the valley floor, home to a 32-metre Maitreya Buddha statue that gazes across the Shyok River towards Pakistan. Explore the ancient prayer halls with a resident monk as your guide. In the afternoon, drive to the village of Sumur to walk through apricot orchards and meet farming families who have lived in this valley for centuries. Return to camp for sundowners overlooking the dunes — a moment of profound stillness.
The Colour-Shifting Lake
Drive south through the Chang La pass (5,360m) towards Pangong Tso — the legendary lake that stretches 134 kilometres across the India-China border. Nothing prepares you for the first glimpse: an impossible sheet of turquoise, azure, and indigo set against barren brown mountains. The colours shift constantly with the light. Check in to your lakeside luxury camp and spend the evening watching the lake transform from blue to green to purple as the sun sets behind the Changchenmo Range.
Sunrise on the Lake
Wake before dawn. The sunrise over Pangong is one of nature's greatest performances — the lake surface mirrors the sky in shades of pink, gold, and violet. Walk along the shore in the morning stillness, the only sound the crunch of frost beneath your feet. After breakfast, drive back to Leh via the Chang La pass, stopping for tea at a roadside dhaba with views that stretch to infinity. Arrive in Leh by late afternoon. Evening at leisure.
Ladakh's Greatest Monastery
Rise before dawn to reach Thiksey Monastery for morning prayers — one of the most powerful experiences in Ladakh. Watch as monks file into the prayer hall, their chanting filling the cold morning air, butter lamps flickering in the darkness. After the ceremony, explore Thiksey's twelve storeys of prayer rooms, libraries, and rooftop views. Continue to Hemis Monastery, Ladakh's largest and wealthiest, home to a remarkable collection of Tibetan thangka paintings and gold statues. Visit the monastery museum to see sacred artefacts dating back centuries.
Ancient Art & Moonland
A full-day excursion along the Indus River to two extraordinary monasteries. First, Alchi — a 1,000-year-old monastery whose interior murals are considered the finest examples of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist art in existence. The paintings predate most European medieval art and depict scenes of astonishing detail and beauty. Continue to Lamayuru, set in a surreal landscape known as 'Moonland' — eroded clay formations that resemble a lunar surface. The monastery itself is one of the oldest in Ladakh, founded in the 10th century.
Farewell to the Mountains
A morning at leisure — perhaps a final walk through the old town, a visit to the Tibetan market for pashmina shawls and prayer beads, or simply sitting on your hotel terrace watching the light change across the Stok Kangri range. A farewell dinner overlooking the valley — a moment to reflect on a journey that has taken you to the highest, most remote, and most spiritually profound corner of India.
